Dense Helical Electron Bunch Generation in Near-Critical Density Plasmas with Ultrarelativistic Laser Intensities

The mechanism for emergence of helical electron bunch(HEB) from an ultrarelativistic circularly polarized laser pulse propagating in near-critical density(NCD) plasma is investigated. Self-consistent three-dimensional(3D) Particle-in-Cell(PIC) simulations are performed to model all aspects of the laser plasma interaction including laser pulse evolution, electron and ion motions. At a laser inte...

Four-frame picosecond interferometry system for probing near-critical density CO2 laser-produced plasmas

We describe a four-frame picosecond green laser interferometer developed at the Neptune Laboratory at UCLA. This diagnostic is applied for measuring the dynamics of CO2 laser produced plasmas in a He gas jet. An example of results of the modification of the plasma density profile by the radiation pressure of the laser pulse is presented.

Nonlinear Propagation of Laser Beams near the Critical-Density Surface in the Plasmas of Direct-Drive Targets

LLE Review, Volume 95 179 Introduction The interaction of laser beams with plasmas near the criticaldensity surface is an important characteristic feature of directdrive inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments.1,2 One of the main laser–plasma interaction processes is stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), which involves the decay of an incident light wave into a scattered light wave and a...

Laser-plasmas in the relativistic-transparency regime: Science and applications

Laser-plasma interactions in the novel regime of relativistically induced transparency (RIT) have been harnessed to generate intense ion beams efficiently with average energies exceeding 10 MeV/nucleon (>100 MeV for protons) at "table-top" scales in experiments at the LANL Trident Laser. By further optimization of the laser and target, the RIT regime has been extended into a self-organized plas...

Direct Comparison of Electron Density Measurements in Laser-created Plasmas Using Stark Broadening and Satellite Line Intensities

Spectral line profiles, broadened mostly by Stark effects from electric fields produced by charge particles, and dielectronic satellite line intensities have recently been used for determining electron densities in the dense region of lasercreated plasmas [1-3]. We present here a direct comparison of electron density measurements in the conduction region of laser created plasmas on a plane targ...
